But even with all of the accounting software and online banking - don't you need to keep all of your receipts? That is kind of what I am having a problem with.

Did you try putting the receipts into a receipt bag? I am wondering if that would help.

I use divided envelope from wallmart. I have a big one with at least 12 divisions (one per month). I also have 12 with 5 divisions(one per week) that I put receipts weekly, then when the month is over, put it in the big one month per month.

Having one that can divide up the months is a good idea.

I was using spreedsheets to track my expenses but now I have found a budget planner with which I can see periodically how much money I have left in my budget, it also provides reviews of all accounts in one place, track all my bills and also helps with budget and cash flow management.

I'm taking an online class on personal finance and it has opened up my eyes to all the details that I want to start documenting. What it mostly takes is determination to get your finances in order so that you can improve them. I personally don't use cash very often because I prefer the online tracking that debit card transactions will allow for. And I keep an envelope for receipts, when there is something that I need to buy with cash.
