Pretty soon, I'm planning on putting up a site offering paid web design services. Now, I've talked with other people a little bit, but no one seems to be quite sure on these questions.
Really, I feel it's going to be more of an issue regarding state laws, but I'll shoot anyway.

First off, do you need any kind of business license to charge for services?
Second, how are taxes primarily dealt with?

For the record, the site is really your average run-of-the-mill web design site, just offering layout design, templates, custom banners, vectors, etc.

Well, I looked into that with my state (Florida) not to long ago. They told me I COULD get a license but they really did recommend it because its not really a "business". Plus by not having a license I don't have to deal with the taxes side of it :P

I'd check with your state first but I'm pretty sure it'll be the same way ;) Any more questions just ask.

Thanks. I can't honestly see the upside to getting a license, though from what I've seen with TV shows that bring up people getting busted for not having a license for this or that, it's probably on the safer side. I'll definitely look into it more.

The thing that is probably hard to get around is the fact that it is an internet business. You said webdesign services, and they have college courses for that. Would someone buy services from someone without a college degree for it? I can see how the people that didn't have the time to go to college or aren't there yet might have the best graphic skills because they had time to practice. But in a business situation, could it hurt someone?

So far it hasn't hurt me, but I've only got a few clients. Most of them know I plan on going to college for it after I get out of high school and they're ok with that.
