A local website that is optimized and Geo-targeted is the most effective and cost effective marketing tool available to the local small business owner. But then I am biased as this is our core market.

wow, not needed. maybe for shops whos business model is based on passing trade but considering a lot of businesses are using yellow pages as there only form of marketing and that no1 under 40 really uses yellow pages anymore (we use google) i would say getting a site up ASAP is a must.

I agree especially with the way the economy is at the moment, customers will be looking online for the cheaper products/services so your website will reach more people.

Why a local business should have a website.

Its really simple all local businesses want to be heard and seen this would give them a really big chance to get popularity and a ground on which to improve their reach. And where else can you get amazing hits and check-outs if not from your website. A website is like a virtually office the more interesting your office is the more customers you get so link that to a website. The more automated solutions that you provide will get you more customers and sorts.

Here is a fav quote I use on my website

You wouldn't attend a client meeting in your favorite sweatpants and rock band T-shirt, would you? The same holds true when marketing your own business. Shoddy Web design can send a prospect to your competitor's doorstep, regardless of your company's quality.

Great quote Bambo, so true! I hate nothing more than a badly designed website.

One advantage would be the exposure, this could trigger referrals. Two, it's a great asset for feedbacks, that is very essential for the growth and development of the services of a business / company or as a whole.

Great point. For a number of reasons:

1) Customers can order online

2) Make their business appear more professional
